1.1 Crystal Chemistry and Bonding Characteristics


(Silicon Carbide Crucibles)

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a covalent ceramic composed of silicon and carbon atoms set up in a tetrahedral latticework, mostly in hexagonal (4H, 6H) or cubic (3C) polytypes, each exhibiting exceptional atomic bond strength.

The Si– C bond, with a bond energy of about 318 kJ/mol, is amongst the best in structural ceramics, conferring exceptional thermal security, solidity, and resistance to chemical strike.

This durable covalent network leads to a product with a melting point surpassing 2700 ° C(sublimes), making it among one of the most refractory non-oxide porcelains offered for high-temperature applications.

Unlike oxide porcelains such as alumina, SiC maintains mechanical stamina and creep resistance at temperatures over 1400 ° C, where numerous metals and standard ceramics begin to soften or degrade.

Its low coefficient of thermal expansion (~ 4.0 × 10 ⁻⁶/ K) integrated with high thermal conductivity (80– 120 W/(m · K)) makes it possible for quick thermal cycling without tragic splitting, an important characteristic for crucible performance.

These inherent residential or commercial properties come from the well balanced electronegativity and comparable atomic sizes of silicon and carbon, which advertise a highly stable and densely packed crystal framework.

1.2 Microstructure and Mechanical Strength

Silicon carbide crucibles are commonly produced from sintered or reaction-bonded SiC powders, with microstructure playing a crucial duty in resilience and thermal shock resistance.

Sintered SiC crucibles are generated via solid-state or liquid-phase sintering at temperatures over 2000 ° C, commonly with boron or carbon ingredients to improve densification and grain boundary cohesion.
