It is soluble in acid and ammonium salt and hardly soluble in water, and its solution is alkaline. Insoluble in ethanol. It has strong refraction in the visible and near-ultraviolet range. Magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3·CaCO3), and seawater are the main raw materials for the production of magnesium oxide. Thermal decomposition of magnesite or dolomite obtains magnesium oxide. Treat seawater with slaked lime to get magnesium hydroxide precipitation, and burn magnesium hydroxide to get magnesium oxide. It is also possible to use the magnesium chloride halide obtained in the comprehensive utilization of seawater or the brine after bromine extraction as raw material, add sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate, etc. to produce magnesium hydroxide or basic magnesium carbonate precipitation and then burn to obtain magnesium oxide. China mainly uses magnesite, dolomite, brine, or brine as raw materials.
Uses of magnesium oxide

Light magnesium oxide is mainly used as a raw material for preparing ceramics, enamels, refractory crucibles, and refractory bricks. In the chemical industry, it is used as a catalyst and a raw material for the manufacture of magnesium salts. It is also used in the manufacture of glass, dyed meal, phenolic plastic, etc. Heavy magnesia is used in the rice milling industry for firing, grinding, and half-rolling. The construction industry is used in the manufacture of artificial chemical floors, artificial marble heat-proof panels, and sound-proof panels, and as fillers in the plastic industry.
