The SiC. SiC has been a key material for cutting and grinding tools since the late 19th century.
Microscopic silicon carbide powders are hexagonal crystals. Their Mohs hardness is 9.2, their Vickers microhardness 3000-3300 kg/mm2, and Knoop microhardness 2670-2815.55 kg/mm2. The microhardness (3300 mm/cubic millimeter) is 3300mm. It's second only to diamond and cubic boron-nitride in the abrasives market, surpassing corundum. The silicon carbide abrasive's density is about 3.20 g/cm3. Its natural bulk density, 1.2 to 1.6 g/mm3, is around 3.20 g/cm3, and its specific gravity at 3.20 to 3.25. As its primary raw material, green silicon carbide is made from petroleum coke and high quality silica. Salt is used as an additif. At high temperatures in resistance furnaces, its hardness equals that of diamond. Additionally, it has higher mechanical strength and harder than corundum.

Making silicon carbide is easy. Simply mix silica and carbon in an Acheson Graphite Resistance furnace at temperatures high between 1600degC (2.910degF), and 2,500degC (4.530degF).
Silica carbide (commonly known as silicon carbide) is made by reacting coke (carbon), and sand (silica).
Heating the mixture with direct current, to temperatures as high as 2700 degC, is possible. A few days later, the product was made from iridescent crystal aggregates. These were then graded and crushed. The silicon carbide powder in its crude (>10mm) grade cannot be sintered at a high density. Use silicon oxynitride (or silicon nitride) for refractory uses. When direct bonding of the desired degree can be achieved, high-purity, gradient silicon carbide is sintered at temperatures of around 2400°C. High density materials (low porosity), require special conditions.
You can make silicon carbide by decomposing gaseous and volatile carbon compounds in an inert atmosphere. This allows you to deposit the reactant on a suitable thermal substrate.
Finally, carbon's solubility is high in liquid silicon. It can be extracted by crystallization of carbon-rich, supersaturated molten silica at high temperatures (1650degC).
This was what formed the base of mature self bonding, reaction bonding technology and fine-grained silicon caride powder.

Because of its excellent stiffness and high conductivity as well as low coefficients of thermal expansion it's a good material choice for large-scale optical mirror applications. The furnace can produce more energy with less molten iron because it has more heat. This energy can be used to adjust the carbon or silicon content, and raise the tapping temperature.

The gemstone silicon carbide used as jewelry is "Synthetic Moissanite" (or simply "Moissanite") after its mineral name.
