What is 316 Stainless Steel
What's the meaning of 316 Stainless Steel?
There are many alloys that are added to steel in order to enhance the desired properties. This stainless steel grade is marine, called Type 316, is resistant to aggressive environments.
There are many different types made of stainless steel. The most common are the L F, H, and H variants. They are all slightly different and each serves reasons that are different. L means that 316L steel is the lowest carbon content, which is below the 316.
3316 and 3316L Stainless Steel Common Quality
Although similar to the Type 304 commonly found in the food industry, the Type 316 and 316L both have higher resistance to corrosion. They also are more durable even at high temperatures. They cannot be harmed by heat treatment , and can be easily stretched and shaped.
Differentialities between 316L and 316 Stainless Steel
316L stainless steel is less carbon than 316. But despite having a reduced carbon level, 316L is very similar with 316 in practically every way. Its cost is comparable,, and both are durable and resistant to corrosion, making them ideal for extreme stress situations.
However, for projects that require lots of welding can be a better choice due to the fact that 316 is more susceptible to welding corrosion rather than 316L (corrosion inside the weld). However, 316 can be annealed to resist welding attenuation. Additionally, it is a suitable stainless steel for use in high temperature, high corrosion applications This is why it is used in marine and construction projects.
None of 316 nor 316L is the least expensive option. The 304 is similar to 304L but the price is much lower. However, neither is as robust as the 317 and 317L, which have higher molybdenum contents and better general corrosion resistance.
