What is Aluminum Silicon Carbide?Silicon carbide can be found in common grinding wheels, blades, and aluminum silicon carbide. Its hardness rating is higher than that of corundum but lower than that of cubic boronnitride and boron carbide. This ceramic material is a good substrate for composites because of its high modulus, and thermal conductivity. This type of silicon carbide is used to make AlSiC (aluminum silica carbide) materials. This silicon carbide is used to make composite materials. It has a high degree of purity that ensures a material with high thermal conductivity.

In industrial manufacturing silicon carbide is first made into preforms (ceramics) that are shaped like the final products. This preform differs from normal silicon carbide ceramics because it has many permeable pores. The aluminum is then hydraulically cast in the micropores using special equipment, under a vacuum environment. Aluminum-silicon carbide composite material has the advantage that it combines ceramics with the low thermal expand coefficient and thermal conductivity of aluminum. Its price is much lower than that for tungsten. It is also able to form large and complex shapes, which tungsten can't.

In the common method of low temperature oxidation sintering, a thick layer of silica will be formed on the surface silicon carbide. This will affect the thermal conduction of the material so that it cannot reach more than 180W/mK at room temperatures (no mater how much is claimed). Our self-developed process for manufacturing ceramic preforms has a silicon dioxide content that is 1/8 less than the conventional method, yet the thermal conductivity of our product exceeds the 240W/mK limit.
