A general summary of magnesium oxide
Magnesium oxide is an inorganic substance with a chemical formula of MgO. It is an oxide of magnesium and an ionic compound. It is a white solid at room temperature. Magnesium oxide exists in nature in the form of periclase and is a raw material for smelting magnesium.
Magnesium oxide has high fire resistance and insulation properties. After being burned at a high temperature above 1000°C, it can be transformed into a crystal, and when it rises to 1500-2000°C, it will become burnt magnesia (magnesia) or sintered magnesia.

Properties of magnesium oxide
Magnesium oxide is an alkaline oxide, which has the same properties as alkaline oxides and is a gelling material. It is a white or off-white powder, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. It is a typical alkaline earth metal oxide with the chemical formula MgO. The melting point is 2852°C, the boiling point is 3600°C, and the density is 3.58g/cm3 (25°C). Soluble in acid and ammonium salt solution, insoluble in alcohol. The solubility in water is 0.00062 g/100 mL (0 °C) and 0.0086 g/100 mL (30 °C). When exposed to the air, it easily absorbs water and carbon dioxide and gradually becomes basic magnesium carbonate. Light products are faster than heavy products. It combines with water to form magnesium hydroxide under certain conditions, showing a slightly alkaline reaction, and the pH of a saturated aqueous solution Is 10.3. It is soluble in acid and ammonium salt and hardly soluble in water, and its solution is alkaline. Insoluble in ethanol. It has strong refraction in the visible and near-ultraviolet range. Magnesite (MgCO3), dolomite (MgCO3·CaCO3), and seawater are the main raw materials for the production of magnesium oxide. Thermal decomposition of magnesite or dolomite obtains magnesium oxide. Treat seawater with slaked lime to get magnesium hydroxide precipitation, and burn magnesium hydroxide to get magnesium oxide. It is also possible to use the magnesium chloride halide obtained in the comprehensive utilization of seawater or the brine after bromine extraction as raw material, add sodium hydroxide or sodium carbonate, etc. to produce magnesium hydroxide or basic magnesium carbonate precipitation and then burn to obtain magnesium oxide. China mainly uses magnesite, dolomite, brine, or brine as raw materials.

Uses of magnesium oxide
The domestic annual output of magnesium oxide is about 12 million tons.
Light magnesium oxide is mainly used as a raw material for preparing ceramics, enamels, refractory crucibles, and refractory bricks. It is also used as a polishing agent, adhesive, coating, and paper filler, as an accelerator and activator for neoprene and fluorine rubber. After mixing with magnesium chloride and other solutions, it can be made into a magnesium oxide water solution. Used in medicine as an antacid and laxative, for hyperacidity of the stomach and duodenal ulcer. In the chemical industry, it is used as a catalyst and a raw material for the manufacture of magnesium salts. It is also used in the manufacture of glass, dyed meal, phenolic plastic, etc. Heavy magnesia is used in the rice milling industry for firing, grinding, and half-rolling. The construction industry is used in the manufacture of artificial chemical floors, artificial marble heat-proof panels, and sound-proof panels, and as fillers in the plastic industry. It can also be used to produce other magnesium salts.
