To start with I was listening to songs from a malayalam film called 'aaravadhu thamburaan'(*ing Mohan lal,Manju Warrier). There are around 5 songs.
Except for one the others are mediocre. But that one is so good that i have been listening to the same song almost everyday. The song based on Hindustani
is sung by KJY. This guy is amazing...in the first charanam he does a humming continuously
for 3 mins 53 secs non stop. And he doesnt stop the humming bluntly. He twists a bit in the end and them atlast comes to a halt.Man that was too good.
(according to the story Manju fall for Mohan after listening to this song-I think any girl will:))
Ravindran has done the music and i will say that this is best after'his highness abdullah'.
If any of u like Malayalam songs try 'chandralekha'.Very catcy tunes and nicely rendered by MGS,Swarna and chitra

Ramki:
KJY Has done wonders in Malayalam which were never publicised as in Tamil or Hindi.. Hear Ramakatha.. from Bharatham, his control, voice modulation & breathing conrol in high picth is just great.. In Kamaldhalam there is a song Anandanadanam.. which goes thru classical to folk in different stanzas..
In Parinayam, his Samajasancharini.. is just unparalleled..I can go on listing.. I haven't heard Aram Thampuran but looks like another hit on the offing...

BS Bharathan was a masterpiece. What u think abt
'sargam'songs??
Btw recently i read in Filmfare that
Kamal hassan won a filmfare award in 1984 for writing lyrics to a hindi song.
This was really surprising.Does anyone have any info.

Ramki,
The lyrics writer is Hassan Kamaal (not Kamalhaasan). He is a totally differnet person. He got the award for "Aaj Ki Awaaz". Another famous movie of HK is "Nikaah" with music by Ravi (who also gave music to the "Sargam" Malayalam film that you just mentioned).

Currently most artists from TFM work outside of TFM (Chitra, Mano, Swarnalatha, SPB, of course IR & ARR). Some earlier artists..
1) P Susheela (Hindi)
2) S Janaki (Hindi)
3) K J Yesudas (Hindi, Bengali)
4) R Sudarshanam (Hindi - because of the AVM connection)
5) Vishwanathan-Ramamoorthy (Hindi)
6) P B Srinivas (Hindi)
7) C Ramachandra (started in South - Tamil, Telugu etc..)

Ramki
It's long since I heard sargam songs. Some are very good esp. the saramathi based one(vineeth sings this song in temple) and one more song (nedumudi teaches Rambha. Not "raaga sudha rasa".) The first lines elude me.
There is one more song in which KJY sings in two voices - old and young. I think this modulation is quite rare for KJY, what you think?

Rajaram the songs are
'krishna kripa saagaram'
and 'aandholanam ..dholanam'
Rajaraman im not able to recollect the song u have mentioned(KJY changing his voice).enne pattu idhu?
let me do a quick listing of sargam songs
apart from the 2 mentioned
there are 2 versions of 'kanna ni aadhyamanen'
and 'raaga sudha rasa'.
There should be one more KJY song i think..
Satish u r rite abt the tamil version of 'aaj ki aawaz' btw which hindi
song did PSuseela sing and under whos music?

"aandolanam" is a nice song. I still cannot recollect that spl KJY song. I think I have to visit my friend who has the cassette.
BTW, "sri saraswathi namosthuthe" is one more song in the movie.
But I like His highness abdullaah (Pramadhavanam and Gopika vasantham) better than Bharatham and sargam.

Rajaraman, the "Sargam" song is "boologa vaikunda pura vasanE". He starts with the old-man's voice and then comes back to his normal voice. Another song in the movie he uses the old-man voice throughout the song (training a bunch of students).
Ramki, P Susheela song innum sariya theriyala.

Rajaraman I prefer his 'rama katha'song..i will say that this is KJYs top 10(in my rating:)).
When first time i listened to the song i had this kinda 'silirthufying'feeling...especially when he sings 'raamaaa'he leaves us in tears.
Too good.
Btw from an article from tomorrows HIndu:)i came to know that he has won an national award for a mallu song in 1972. Is this is first award??

That's the song..! Thanks for reminding it Satish. Is there any other KJY song with so much modulation?
Ramki.. I too consider "raama kaatha" as one of his alltime best. Intha paattoda prelude is a wonderful piece. Konja neram manasai ullukkidum.
But Bharatham music overall didn't appeal to me to the extent of HHA, perhaps because the movie was not good.
Satish, can you list SJ songs (I have heard a few) and MSV-TKR movies in Hindi.

Rajaraman, enna saar, "Bharatham" movie_ya poi not good nu solla rengaley, nyayama? Agreed, all songs were not of high standard but the movie itself was excellent. The movie mainly focusses on the character's psyche rather than a strong story. Mohanlal and Orvashi were wonderful in their roles. Compared to Bharatham, High Highness Abdullah is a bad comedy.
If you saw "Aaha" you will notice how Suresh Krishnan and Crazy Mohan have lifted portions from "Bharatham".
SJ has sung many songs in Hindi films - for Bappi Lahiri mostly. Recently for Anand-Milind too. She also sang in the Hindi remake of Shankarabharanam - "Sur Sangam".
Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy's movie was "Naya Aadmi". It had one song by Madan Mohan. I think the movie had 7 or 8 songs.

Satish saar..! "songs were not of high standard" ippadi neenga sollalaamaa?? Naan appadi sollave illai.. It's a strong statement.
Yes..I didn't like the movie because of the weak story. I never expected this from sibimalayil. Sema disappointment. Ennavo "psyche" athu ithu-nu solreenga. Namakku onnum puriyaleppaa..
After seeing the movie, I felt all the talent was wasted. But the "raama kathaa" song picturisation was superb.
BTW, is this movie based on some true story?

Aiyayo, intha threadai gavanikkave illaye...Namakku pudicha subject pesureenga
Rajaraman:
Bharatham is not good : Definitely film is artistic and having no commercial appeal.. But cant U see the combo of Mohanlal-KJY working in tandem for yet another roaring success in Kerala.. See Lal's(Mohanlal's pet name) action in Devasabhathala.. in HHA and Ramakatha/Raghuvamsavathe..one can't make out that KJY is singing for him.. Infact in one of the interviews KJY remarked that ML is the one of the best in totally identifying with the classical songs..
The saramathi song i temple is Pravahame, Ganga pravahame... U missed one of the fast paced classicals in the film: Sangeethame, Amara sallapame.. The lyrics of the songs blossom into a definition of music, the joy, the experience and satisfaction of listening..
A complete list of Sargam songs:
1. Pravahame...
2. Kannadi Adyamayi..
3. Bhooloka Vaikunda..
4. Andolanam..
5. Sangeethame..
6. RagaSudha Rasa..
7. Krishnakripa sagaram..
Sree Saraswathi Namosthuthey..(haven't seen this song in movie..!!)
But one of the landmark musical films IMO is Kudumbasametham..(All semi-classical light songs and it is definitely an asset..)
