Pradeep..
I hope You wud have heard "aezhu swarangalum thazhuki varum oru gaanam"(chiriyo chiri/mal/ravindran)
if i am right it follows sivaranjani+g3.
i heard that it's called misra sivaranjani.
then isn't "tere mere beech main"too based in misra sivaranjani.

Rajesh,
is rajesh_rs=rajesh_tvm?
yes you are correct, you might want to add "mere naina Sawan bado ",Pranaya Sarovara theeram(mallu) etc.... there are lots of film songs that use G2/G3 and D1/D2 interchangebly
Misra sivranjini uses both G3 and D1 as anya swaras.
I couldnt get any respone to my earlier qs..

"Sandaikozhi" seems like Khamas for some portion but suddenly in "konja neram ennai kollaiyaa", it sounds like Kaapi. Rahman's usual kalappadam :)-

Hi guys. I have a question I would like to present. There's this one SPB devotional song, 'Kalmanam Urugi', and the tune sounds very beautiful. But I cannot make out what raagam is it. Kanakangi?? Ramapriya?? Chandrajothi?? None of the above? What is it?
Here's the link:

Listen and tell us what you think.

purv

It (Kalmanam Urugi) sounds kinda like Rathnaangi to me, maybe Gamanasrama, but I would like a second opinion.

I read the statement as "Sandaikozhi seems like 'Thamas' for some portion but suddenly....".
especially when the post is immediately after Vel's ;)
I was wondering Vel is called as "sandakozhi" in this thread and thought that mythila is all set to take him here (too) :D
then i winked my eyes twice and carefully read the statement correctly. :)

Let me be a little more specific. 'Kalmanam Urugi' is in SPB's devotional album entitled 'Devi Gaanam.' This album also has songs like 'Yezhigalai Thavam' in Subhapanthuvaraali and 'Moogambigai Unnai' in Sivaranjani.

BTW, is it true that 'Naadhar Mudhi Melirukkum' in the 60s film Thiruvarutchelvar (KV Mahadevan)is based on raaga Punnagavaraali?
- From: Mythila (@ 128.88.255.34)
on: Tue Jun 22 06:04:32 EDT 2004
yes, it is on Punnaagavaraali. There is another song "Muzhu nilavu kaayum neram " from an obscure film PournamiNilavil or something , sung by Jeyachandran, MD: GangaiAmaran which I think is also Punnaagavaraali and the last time I heard that song was when I was in school.
Any info about the movie/song is welcome

Yes Muzhu Nilavu Kayam Neram is indeed punnagavarali and Ganagai Amaran indicated in one of the interviews in those days. Film name i dont remember exactly, may be Oru Vidu kadhai Oru Thodar kadhai ??

Hello All,
The recent hindi film Lakshya.. has one song "Agar Thum Kaho..." Just the initial Pallavi lines reminding the Charanam of "Nagumo Ganale..." Any comments ? I feel now-adays lot of bgms and songs of hindi films has the tfm touch. May be the migrants from tfm are doing some good job !

En Uyir Kannammaa - has a lovely Chitra solo song
"yaarai kettu thenral poovai serndhadhu" in Shivaranjini raagam. This song is deeply moving and erotic at the same time.
Eetti - a fascinating SJ solo "kaatukulle karugamani" in raagam Madhyamavathi.Gives me a feeling of getting lost into the deep woods
Iam desperately longing to listen to these two songs .

Thanks for your input, Mythila.
Now, here's a little tidbit for you all, on raagam Ahiri.
It's raaga lakshanam looks like this:
s r1 s g3 m1 p d1 n2 S
S n2 d1 p m1 g3 r1 s
It is a janya of 14th Melakarta, Vakhulabharanam. This raagam is a sampoorna-sampoorna raagam, with a vakram in the aarohanam. It is a bhaashaanga raagam, with the bhaashaanga swaras being Ri and Ga. Finally, it is very much like Subhapanthuvaraali, in that it is generally used for pathos, and 'will make you cry.' There's a superstition that if one sings Ahiri in the morning, one will not get any food for the day, since it is generally used for pathos.
I think this raagam has actually been used in a TFM song, by none other than the genius Ilayaraja. The song comes in the film 'Ponmaana Selvan', as 'Thoppile Irunthaalum.' This song uses all the notes of Vakhulabharanam, and it seems sogamaana (sad) in its outlook. But it sounds different from other songs in V'Bharanam raagam, such as 'Jingaan Jinakkuthaan' in Veetla Viseshanga or 'Enga Rathnam Thanga Rathnam' in Sattam En Kaiyil.

Pls reconfirm whether this song purely follows Sreeragam
"Theendaai..mei theendaai"
any other film song based on sree.?
Now i am closely listening to the keerthanam "entharo mahanubhavulu"by Dr.BMK
pls let me know anyother singer had given better
performance on this keerthanam.

One more thing. IMHO , two carnatic singers simultaneously singing (eg.Hyderabad Bros.,Bombay Sisters)is not so pleasing to the ears compared to solo singing. "konjam koochal poala ulladhu."
Now only I startted hearing to Clasical music.

Rajesh,
"Vizhamalae irukka mudiyuma" from STUDENT No-1, may be a candidate for sree ragam.
