By now we must appreciate the positive qualities of ARR's musical genre or style and interpretations. ARR has single handendly made film music and that too, Tamil film music one of the most favorite discussion topics anywhere. He reengineered or turned around the concept of film music in India and made it a pop culture. Though there is something left to be desired in his creativity, he has forever changed the landscape of Indian film music. Taking it to a different platform, he has escaped comparisons and stands at the heap of a new generation of musical presentation and thought. I feel glad that ARR happened at the right time to Indian films. Otherwise look what might have happened to Isaignani, who probably would've lost the inspiration to stay around. ARR's has woken up IR from his classical mode and made IR change mode to a trendy style, eg: KM and MVU, each filmy score of IR getting more experimental and in tune with current taste for music. In other words, I personally thank ARR for being the EYES AND EARS OF IR. New rhythms, extremely different melodic structures. etc.. In addition, ARR is gaining on to be the next icon of music in Indian film music, maybe not in Tamil film music, however. This is what we need. New persectives, a 360 degree difference in styles. In this thread, it will be beneficial to talk about how ARR brought in new things that made us wonder why didn't our other composers attempt this, so easy, so out there, why didn't they. And,difficult innovations that challenged even IR. This will discussion should be purely to discuss the impact of ARR's contributions and his impact on IR's creative styles.

ROJA was indeed a great album. but isn't it farfetched to say that this one album 'toppled' IR? exactly 9 weeks after roja was released came 'Devar magan' and 'inji iduppazhaga' was a blazing hit! ARR's style did not overwhelmingly dominate tfm (though it has influenced the productions of a few other MD'S)

Is ARR is running out of his stuff. yes! he is. He himself said he had stopped experimenting and want to set a trend. Well he has suceeded in that sense. I feel his thirsty for good music is declining. Previously he used redo the music till he gets satisfied. Now he composes music till the Director or producer get statisfied. The attitude IR reached atfer 16 or 17 years. For a Director or Producer, whatever that comes out of ARR is muqabula or Humma humma.. Most of them know nothing about music.
Eighty percent of them director are not sure what they want. That makes ARR more vunerable. coz IR gets inspired by the situation or he himself makes the situation more enjoyeable by giving some tips to directors. Thatz why IR's re-recording is fanatatic. He grasp the situation and adds more flavour to it. But ARR likes to spend more time analyzing the song and improvise it gradually. A good director's inspires any musician. ARR himself told that If bharthiraja has not given right direction, the song Porayle Ponnuthaiye.. would never been such a wonderful song.
In Bollywood ARR is gettting blamed for giving good music only to maniratnam. In bollywood they sell tunes. But in TFM they sell situations.If no good situation, ARR is out in couple of years. But I knaw practically its not going to happen. Just law of averages is enough for ARR to give a hit.
Just take the sensational song of the decade
Situation: Nagma battles with her father and release her lover from getting killed. They want to celebrate it. But how. Shankar thought, Let me
take the same situation to cowboy's land. So you see the fanatastic song and product.
Prabhu deva is about to be Killed( By hanging). Nagma comes in a horse(cowboy) and releases him by shooting the rope. They fooled the everybody.
That why valli called Nagma "villiangalay villthum vennilla". The typical cowboy stuff with ClintEastwood flavour.
Even in the song picturisation you will see that Prabhu deva and nagma fooling everybody with hat, animation and whatnot?
What a nice commercial imagination from shankar.
ARR balanced the Situation with very a good number, teh rest is history.
Now, I know you asking "Hell the situation! whatz the point".
The point is ARR himself cannot make music. His 'own' stuff seems to have gone. If the situation demands ARR will continue to give music for another 10 years. Same holds good for IR, He has to team-up with good director to get on to top.
He can't give Excellent number for Hero running after heroine for n'th time. Same with ARR
Think of the experimentation in rasathi En usuru.. from Theif thief(whole album is expermentation). You know what the critic was for TT. It was not for indian audience, it was very much westernized. But right now, ARR is boring and repetative (except few).

Senthil, how did Mukkala Muqabla song become famous? (yeah right,tell us it is the song of the decade;----) For 25 or 30 years no one in India composed or even dared to imagine such a formless composition. All composers were purists until ARR came along. For him, anything silly was fine and that is how he shoved all the greats to the gutter. No insult to ARR, please even today when I hear Mukkala song, automatically I smile as if in wonder how could you do this man, ARR and get the accolades. Sadly I don't listen to the song completely, because I feel like a school boy watchin kabbadi.

The greatest stunner from ARR to me was "poovukkenna poottu" where he gradually takes sounds of a baby(think its his neice) and mixes with the flute before going into the main stream. This one really tantalized me.

I said the tune tantalized me 'cos none of the MD's before ARR have gone to this depth to bring out a baby's voice to add along with the normal music track. If you still can't see the presentation of ARR which even a common listener like me could, it mekes me feel prou that I'm quite better off listening music than somebody. :)))

It's a real joke to have a comparison between ARR and IR. ARR is no par with IR in any arena from song composition and re recording. Especially, in re-rec, he's an utter waste MD. U cant even number a single movie, where his BGM is good. The songs in his first movie were really good. Even then, it's all seasonal hits and if u hear the songs in ROJA ( except kaadhal rojavae...), u'll get bored soon. The melody in Raja's music is missing in rehman. I hope he's running out of stuff,as u can hear many repetitions in his new songs. U can create a separate database for that...
