Competition is prevailing every where, in Cinema field it is more.
So , I have a query for you folks, from the begining of the South Indian Films, whom do you think as the top singers(male and female) ...?
You can select up to 5 singers in both the categories.
For our convience, we shall divide the period in to three parts:
1953 - 1970 ----- category I
1970 - 1990 ------ category II
1990 - till date --- category III
Top Male singers in Category I:
2. K.J. Yesudoss
3. Hari Haran
5. Unni Menon/ Unni Krishnan/Srinivas
3. L.R. Eshwari
3. Vani Jairam
1. K.S. Chitra
5. Anuradha Sriram, Sadhana Sargam
IS there anyone I missed..? This list is based on the chances they got in those periods and also there fame at that time. This is not personal opinion, I have put forth this topic, now you music lovers will decide who is top singer.

those options are for just the current south indian film music......in this competitive music world no singer can survive for about decades and years like the legends spb,janaki,susheela,tms,jesudas,chitra.....etc.
so here is my list of singers in all languages starting from 1950's.....!!!
MALE; Tms,pbs,kjj,spb,malaysia vasudevan,mano,hariharan,unnikrishan.......

A lot of debate over the singers. According to me, Padmasree Dr.K.J Yesudas should top in category II and III. Moreover he comes in Part I, as he started singing in 60's. Yesudas is superb in every aspect of a song (voice, rendition, bhavam)and he has constantly tried to improve his talent in all these years. His unparallelled voice is a divine gift and he has made fukll use of it. SPB is a great singer, but he is good in flexible and high pitched songs. Voice control in base is not so appreciable as KJY.(" Listen to his Malayalam song Ottakkambi nadam - (in Madhyamavati")). KJY has got tremendous control of voice in all the three octaves. Very few people were able to club light music (heart driven) and classical music (brain driven). Hariharan is really good for light music and Ghazals and so sreenivas.
few of KJY top songs:
1.Devanganangal (Njan Ghandharvan)
2.Anuragalolagatri (Dhwani) ultimate!
3.Devi (Njan ghandharvan)
6. Gori thera (Chitchor)
7. Ka karoon sajni
endless the list.....

thank you for providing such an opportunity.
in all the shown categoried shri.k.j.yesudas stands at the zeniths of incompetent exaltation.
and in the upcoming buddies, vidhu pratap is the best choice. because of his superb voice matching both to the romantic and to the messy tunes he has conquered the hearts. And in the mixing up of expressions and moods in the lyrics he stands next to kjy.

I feel that the ultimate singer is K.S.Chitra.. No wonder she has bagged so many National Awards. Here is a singer, inspite of not being trained in Classical Music, has an unmatched control of her voice... Perhaps she is the only singer who can stand tall among the male legends like KJY and SPB. Another fact is that whenever she and another male singer sing solos of the same song, Chitra seems to excel above her counterpart. A simple eg; would be the song "Oru Naru Pushpamaayi" from the film MeghMalhaar. Untouched by fame or glory, she still continues to be the humble Chitra we saw perform in "Sindhu Bhairavi"..
Sujatha, on the other hand , emotes the song to such an extent that it irritates to the hilt. Her "konjal" is simply unbearable. These days, music directors are being unjust to Chitra by roping in Sujatha..

Kumar,u dont have to be Chitra's P.R.O. She is great even if opportunities dont come her way.But why drag Sujatha into this? She is as good as Chitra in her own way.If her singing irritates u bad luck.Remember there may be people who get irritated with Chitra's singing too.

Sorry Raj, I didn't mean to show down Sujatha.. I am sure she doesn't emote Tamil songs as much as she does in Malayalam. Almost every song in Malayalam that she sings today has been subject to excesses.
